(CNN) – In an effort to protect against variants of the new Coronavirus, the UK will close all travel lanes starting at 4am local time on Monday.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the move at a press conference on Friday, stressing that the only way to get to the country is to get a negative result for a coronavirus test.
“This means that if you come to this country, you must have proof of a negative Covid test you took within 72 hours before departure. You must have filled out the Passenger Locator Form, and your airline will require proof,” Johnson said.
“You may also be examined when you land and face heavy fines for refusing to comply, and upon arrival, you must then quarantine for 10 days, and not leave your home for any reason at all. Or take another test on the fifth day and wait,” Johnson added, “evidence of another negative result.” We will intensify our enforcement both at the border and in the country. “
Procedures apply to all travelers, including British and Irish travelers.
The Ministry of Transport said in a press release that increased enforcement will support the new rules, including more immediate checks on passengers who have entered the country.
The move suspends travel corridors that have been in place between the UK and a variety of destinations since July 2020.
“The level of risk associated with the emergence of new variants globally has now increased, which requires more stringent measures to prevent all potential pathways through which new strains of the virus could enter the UK while we are considering how best to respond,” the Department of Transport said.
The new procedure will be reviewed on February 15th.
